It’s not for a lack of awareness, because pretty much everyone know about the campaign. It’s not about the charity, because who doesn’t want to help those less fortunate. It has nothing to do with the celebs that offered to die for the cause.
But, for a second, let’s pretend you live under a rock and you’re only source of news is my blog.
A bunch of celebs from the Kardashians, Janelle Monae, Ryan Seacrest, Lady Gaga and a slew of others all will quit their social media lives until $1M is raised. With something like 30M combined followers and the love these celebs get anytime they are anywhere… you’d think this campaign would be a slam dunk on paper. It was meant to be a 24 hour campaign and they’d be back, however, 5 days in… and less than 300K has been raised.
Well as sports teams (Cough Toronto Raptors) know, best on paper rarely translates to best in reality.
Here’s the problem…. Nobody gives a damn about celebrities cutting their online life. Nobody really needs to read their boring tweets.
What are celebs really ‘losing’ on from this stupid campaign? They get to tweet less? Big fucking deal. Also, I hope this is a reality check for these pricks.. you guys aren’t such a big deal to think that your online life matters to us enough to give to dying children in Africa! Yikes.
To be honest (and it’s nothing against the African children), but I hope this campaign never hits $1M. Twitter is a better place without celebrities broadcasting their constant blah. The ego of these celebs…
In fact, I think the opposite should occur. Oprah, Ellen, Ashton, Britney, Ryan, Kim, Khloe etc… if we donate $1M will you quit Twitter permanently? Because that would inspire me to donate. Hell, at that point the cause could be “Kill the Lions” and I’d still support it – that’s how much I think Twitter is better without them.
But, so kids don’t suffer somewhere (sorry again African kids…) I’m going to make another donation of $50 to the Sick Kids Hospital and would love if you’d join me in donating something as well!
PS. My birthday is Tuesday, this would be a great gift!
